Weekly Creative Team Digest

As always, the Scrapbook Nerd Creative Team has been hard at work creating stunning projects to share with you.

Nathalie's Page

Nathalie's Page Detail

Nathalie created this layout about a selfie gone wrong using the newly released cut file, and Pebbles’ Forever My Always collection. She used some Vicki Boutin gold glaze and one of Echo Park’s stencils to bring a bit of texture to the page. But the star of the page is that sweet picture of her baby’s kiss!

Mari's Page

Mari created this romantic layout using a combination of collections including Simple Stories “Romance”, Vicki Boutin “All the Good Things” and Crate Paper “Good Vibes”. The base of the layout is the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media Paper. Mari added some Prima water color to the background using the packaging technique. There are a few mixed media stamps on the background as well. Then the layers were built on top of the mixed media. The large floral pieces were fussy cut from a paper from the “Romance” collection. The softness of the design complements the romantic photograph.

Gisele used a Silhouette file (hearts wreath) and Photoplay I Love Gymnastics, frames by Crate Paper and punched some hearts. She used a puffy sticker of a butterfly as she always has something of nature on her grandnieces pages. Unknown enamel stars. Inspired by Laura Whitaker sketch.

And I brought you this sketch and page where I replaced one of the sketch layers with a custom made stencil and some stitching using the Vicky Boutin All the Good Things collection.

I hope we’ve inspired you. Have a great weekend and be sure to share your projects on the Scrapbook Nerd Friends and Fans Facebook page.

Creative Team projects at scrapbooknerd.com

Hello my crafty friends! I’m back to share with you all the fantastic projects the Creative Team has been creating for you.

First up is Mari with this gorgeous 12×12 layout.  I love the stitching coming in from each corner. It really draws your eye in toward the photo.

Mari has used the Crate Paper Good Vibes collection to create this layout. The base of the layout is white card stock. Mari did some gold stitching with her sewing machine from corner to corner to create a focal point for the layout. She then applied some Ranger Distress Oxide Ink in Peacock Feathers and Cracked Pistachio in the center of the paper. Some drops of water were added to the inked area to create a water droplet effect. The photo layers were created using the 6×6 paper pad and a pom pom chipboard frame. Bits of paper, stickers, enamel dots and embellishments were used from the collection to finish up the layout.

Next we have Nathalie’s page. I love the layering of the flowers on this page. Fussy cutting can be time consuming but the final result is definitely worth it.

Nathalie created this page using Jillibean’s Farmhouse Stew collection. She wanted to use the flower motif of the collection, so there was a lot of fussy cutting. The direction of the title complements the flower explosion of the page that is all about her little cousins in Ecuador!

Gisele’s page captures her busy in the kitchen! The snowflake right next to the photo is a beautiful complement to the theme of the page and really grabs your attention.

Gisele used the Simple Stories Very Merry collection. The page also includes some Simple Stories enamel dots, a snowflake fussy cut from the papers, Crystal Nuvo drops in white blizzard over the wood veneer snowflake, words, stickers and chipboard from the collection, deer and twine unknown, alphas are Jillibean and the date stamp is by Shimelle.

And I brought you 2 pages and a sketch designed to demonstrate how easy it is to get more photos on a page using a collage app with a single photo sketch if you need to fit more on a page.

For this page I used the Echo Park Cat Mini Theme Collection, wood veneer by Jillibean and some Thickers.

Get More Photos On Your Layout

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials @ scraobooknerd.com

Step by Step paper crafting tutorials

Hello all. Milena here. I’m always trying to find ways to get more photos on my layout. A lot of sketches these days are for a single photo – mine included – but, while these pages are beautiful,  I often find I just can’t limit myself to one photo. Last month, I shared how I turn a single page sketch into a double page and this month I’m going to turn a single photo sketch into a multiple photo layout.

Last year, just before Christmas, we lost our family cat to cancer. It was a hard time for everyone and we didn’t want to be missing him over the holidays so we went out and got ourselves a couple of new kittens. All of my Christmas photos were of these kittens and they are so cute I just couldn’t limit myself to just one.

I started with this sketch:

January Tutorial Sketch

And created this page about our boy Shadow. You can see this sketch calls for a 5×7 photo, which is perfect to showcase this photo of the two of us but rather limiting for scrapbooking the kittens.

January Tutorial Page Shadow

I used Pic Collage on my iPhone and created a 5×7 collage of my favourite photos of the kittens. The free version prints a watermark on your photo but if that bothers you, you can purchase the full version and you no longer have the watermark.

I hope you found this useful and are able to make sketches work for you and the photos you have instead of dismissing them if they don’t match the photos you have perfectly.

Scrapbook Nerd Girl Digest | Week in Review

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by the Scrapbook Nerd blog today!  Hopefully you are finding some normalcy in all of the holiday chaos!  The Nerd Girls are still busy creating and having fun with all of our goodies from the shop.  We have lots of inspiration for you this week

Let’s start with this amazing layout by Nathalie. This layout was created using one of Paige Evans’ cut files and a bit of cross stitching. Nathalie used Crate Paper’s “FA LA LA” collection, and some stickers from MME’s “Oh Joy”collection. All the colorful colors matched the picture of Nathalie’s littles in front of the Christmas tree

There are so many fun details on this layout, including some stamping and journaling.

The cross stitching on this layout is absolutely sublime.

Next we have some adorable cards by Gisèle Julien. These cards are made with the Crate Paper “FALALA” collection as well, and some Nuvo Drops in white. You can see some added stitching with white floss.  Love that detail!

Mixing it up with some pocket scrapbooking, we have team member Milena. Milena is catching up on summer layouts!! This page uses the Bella Blvd. “Mind Your Manners” collection. This is a clean, simple sketch designed for quick scrapping while getting many photos on the page.

Milena did some journaling by typing on her layout.  This adds a nice clean touch to the layout!

This is the sketch that Milena used for her layout.

Be sure to check out all of the amazing products in the shop!!

We hope you were inspired this week by our Nerd Girls!  We wish you a wonderful holiday season!  Take lots of photos!!

Extend Your Single Sketch

Sometimes I have a single page sketch I really like but the photos I want to work with are from a trip or at an event and I need more than a single page. An easy way to take a sketch and turn it into a double page layout is to use that single page sketch to showcase the best photos of the bunch then build out a very simple facing page using the same paper etc. In this case, I’m going use a simple grid design.

I had some photos of my daughter and I working on fixing up our front porch this summer. I wanted to include more than just before and after shots so I used this sketch:

3 Photo Sketch

to build out the first page.

3 Photo Page

Double Page

This page is simple and clean and the focus is on the photos. But I still had many more photos of the process that I also wanted to include so I came up with a simple grid format:

Grid Design

And I built out the second page.

In this case I used 3.5×3.5” photos but you could easily change this up to accommodate as many or as few photos as you would like to use.

You could pair this grid design with any single page sketch. If the number of photos you wanted on that second page didn’t correspond with the number of photos in the grid, you could replace one of the photo blocks with paper, embellishments or even journaling! This grid page could even be used as a single page too if that fit your needs.

3 Photo Page

I hope this tutorial has given you some ideas on how to get more photos on a layout and how to adapt a single page sketch to suit your needs.

Craft on, everyone.

Nerd Girl Inspiration This Week

We have had a week of fun inspiration and have lots to share with you that we have been working on!

This first project was created by Creative Team Member Milena Woodiwiss!

Milena’s layout is based on this week’s sketch. With the use of patterned paper and embellishments, Milena has turned the sketch into a simple, fun and fast page. Milena has used
the Pink Fresh Studio’s Escape the Ordinary collection. It’s been perfect for her pages
this month of her family’s trip to northern Ontario.simple sketch by Milena for scrapbooknerd.com

Next, we have another beautiful layout from Creative Team Member Nathalie DeSousa.

This layout was created with the Dream Big collection from Fancy Pants Designs and includes a little bit of stitching (plus a Silhouette cut file), and a bit of watercolor. This is one of Nathalie’s favorite pictures of her daughter on their last vacation, as they experienced some of the most beautiful skies while flying on route to Ecuador

This next layout was created by Creative Team Member Gisele Julien.

Gisele has created Project Life type pages(2) depicting an afternoon at the apple orchard using Echo Park A Perfect Autumn papers, some apples punched with a small punch, wood veneer apples, enamel dots and chipboard, plus some word chipboard.

Lastly, Creative Team Member Mari Clarke’s project is in a Traveler’s Notebook.

Mari created this layout using the Simple Stories Beautiful collection and Simple Stories traveler’s notebook.  The collection has so many coordinating pieces, including die cuts, stickers, 12×12 papers, and a 6×8 paper pad.  There are so many possibilities to use this in a fun and creative way.

We hope you are inspired to do some scrapbooking this weekend!  Pop over to the shop and check out all of the scrappy goodness that will help you craft some layouts and document your memories!

Have an awesome, scrappy weekend!

xxMari

Getting The Most Out Of Your Sketches

November Sketch Tutorial Page Detail

Tutorials and creative tipsWhen I find a sketch I like or one that worked particularly well for me, I go through my photos to see if there are any others that will work with the same sketch. However, I don’t want all my pages to look the same so I try to change the sketch up a bit. To demonstrate, I’m going to use one sketch to do two pages today. I’m even going to use the same collection – Pink Fresh Studio’s Escape the Ordinary – to show exactly how different two pages can be, even using the same sketch and supplies.

I started with this single photo sketch:

November Tutorial Sketch

To create this page:

November Sketch Tutorial Page Example

November Sketch Tutorial Page Detail

You can see the page very closely follows the sketch. I had another 4×4 photo from the same trip we took to a resort in Northern Ontario and I like to use the same paper theme throughout our trips so I thought I would try using the same sketch. I started by rotating the page clockwise and shifted the photo, matting layers, title and journaling to the bottom of the page, leaving a lot of lovely white space to the top. I kept the embellishment cluster in the top right corner for balance and distributed the other clusters accordingly and came up with this basic design.

November Sketch Tutorial Rotated

And this page:

November Sketch Tutorial Rotated

You can see these pages don’t look identical even using the same paper. You could probably keep rotating this sketch and come up with many different looks if you wanted to.

The next time you find a sketch you like, you should try to do more than one page with it. You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with.

Nerd Girl Weekly Project Digest

Hello scrappy nerds, it’s Friday, Gisele here to give you a wrap-up of our  Scrapbook Nerd week. It was Canada’s Thanksgiving here on Monday, so a short week for those working.

Lots to talk about: I posted a tutorial on Tuesday about a card I designed: Endless Possibilities.

Here’s the card:

I used the Simple Stories Vintage Blessings to create the card. It was designed to push yourself to alter or add to your project, the possibilities are endless.

The other design team members have also been busy designing some amazing work for you with the following.

First off was Nathalie DeSousa creating this gem:

This layout was created using the Family & Co. collection from Fancy Pants Designs, and the Trendy Trellis cut file from the Cut Shoppe. It was her ode to Fall and all its colours.

Next up, Milena Woodiwiss was grateful for fall with this LO and sketch:

The background paper is Chic Tags. Cardstock is American Crafts. All other paper and embellishments are Amber Moon by Prima. Fonts are American Typewriter and Bebas.

Barbara Clayton created 2 cards:

1st card: She used some of her left-over bits and created some Fall cards. Using the One Canoe Two Creekside collection, I’ve fussy-cut some of the images from the patterned papers and used them to accent this gorgeous tag!

2nd card: For this card, she pulled out her Stitch Happy sewing machine, from We R Memory Keepers, and sewed around the edges of the card. Then she did some more fussy-cutting to add some embellishments.

Hope we have inspired your week and that you create some great scrappy projects. Until next time, have a great scrappy day 🙂

New Sketch Reveal and a Challenge

Scrapbook Sketches from scrapbooknerd.com

Milena our sketch designer has another fabulous multi-photo layout sketch to share with us.
Remember you can use the sketch as is or you can turn the sketch on its side or change the photo size to suit your needs. Make sure to scroll down to see three different takes on this sketch.

First up, Milena created a fun layout about her daughter. She used the Dream On collection from Pinkfresh Studio. We really love the pop of navy in that collection and the layering that Milena added with pattern papers, puffy stickers and cut apart pieces from the collection.
Live layout by Milena using sketch #41 from scrapbooknerd.com
Next up, Nathalie created a Traveller’s Notebook spread with the sketch in mind. Nathalie flipped the sketch to the left to get a vertical row of photos. You’ll notice she was able to keep some of the layering pieces/embellishments pretty true to the original sketch.

The last take on the sketch is from Joy.
Joy used the main section of the sketch where the photos are to inspire her card. Focusing on one portion of the sketch really helped the idea for this card come to life. The cute little-watercoloured bears are so fun!
