The Tim Holtz Design Ruler is a clear ruler with a tapered acrylic straight edge on one side for measuring lengths and drawing lines and a metal straight edge on the other side for accurate cutting. In between is a grid, two sets of measurements and holes for piercing. The grid is measured in quarter inches. The holes are spaced 1/8 of an inch apart. The ruler is lightweight and sturdy.

The ruler can be used similarly to most rulers because it goes from 0-12 inches. It is marked for each 1/2",1/4" and 1/8" increments. Unlike most traditional rulers it does not have some measurements such as 1/16" and 9/16". I didn't find that to be a real drawback, though. The measurements are accurate. One set of numbers features a center design where 0 is in the middle of the ruler and measurements are placed outward in each direction from the center. The center design is helpful for centering things on the scrapbook pages and other projects.

The grid design allows the ruler to be lined up correctly. Papercrafters often have a hard time knowing when the ruler is straight. This Design Ruler solves that problem. The grid lines provide a way to make sure it is straight before drawing a line.

The metal edge can be used to line up a cut with a craft knife. Always use a glass mat or self-healing mat when using a craft knife. The ruler has small holes 1/8" apart. By using a piercing tool you can create holes in paper underneath it. It pierces well with a variety of piercing tools, even a thumbtack.
