Hello everyone! Welcome to another Scrapbook Nerd Academy.
I’m loving all the foil additions to the collection these days. It seems to be all about gold. However, if you’re like me, you’re wishing there were more silver. So, last week I decided to take matters in my own hands and got out my roll off aluminum foil and started playing around. My goal was just try to emboss just the foil, but in playing around, ended up creating my own foil embossed elements.
I had cut out a background stencil on my silhouette. I was trying to just emboss the design straight into the foil by running it through my cuttlebug with my rubber mat. When it came out I really loved the look of the foil pressed into the die cut card. It had the look of the foil being embossed right into the card.
So, the lights went off and I started playing more and ended up with some gorgeous silver embossed elements for my layout. Today, I’m going to show you how you can achieve this look.
What you need:
Die cuts – either cut yourself on your die cut machine, or purchased. For this tutorial, I used single layer die cuts
Die Cut Machine such as a cuttlebug or Big Shot
Embossing Mat, or Rubber Mat – I use a rubber mat found in the plumber’s department at the hardware store
Aluminum foil
Step-by-step:
Place the rubber mat onto your cutting mat. Then place a layer of tin foil the size of your cutting mat or a little smaller – either shiny side up, or shiny side down, depending upon the look you’re after. Next. place your die cuts, face up, on top of the rubber mat. Top it with your top cutting mat.
The purpose of the rubber mat is to push the foil into the die cut, to give it the embossed look.
Put through your machine.
When it comes out, the foil may be a little wrinkly. Don’t worry about it because the foil is very forgiving and will smooth out.
You will notice that the foil adheres to the die cut quite well, so you don’t need to use adhesive.
Take your foil and die cuts off the mat. Place them on a hard surface and rub your fingers over the surface to smooth out the wrinkles.
Turn them over to the wrong side and place on the rubber mat and smooth out again, with your finger tips, pressing into the die cut as you go.
Trim foil around your die cut to fit.
And there you have it. Your silver embossed die cuts that will look amazing on your project.
Here’s my finished layout using several of the die cuts. I love the look of the embossed silver so I will be doing this again!
