Getting The Most Out Of Your Sketches

When I find a sketch I like or one that worked particularly well for me, I go through my photos to see if there are any others that will work with the same sketch. However, I don’t want all my pages to look the same so I try to change the sketch up a bit. To demonstrate, I’m going to use one sketch to do two pages today. I’m even going to use the same collection – Pink Fresh Studio’s Escape the Ordinary – to show exactly how different two pages can be, even using the same sketch and supplies.
I started with this single photo sketch:
To create this page:
You can see the page very closely follows the sketch. I had another 4×4 photo from the same trip we took to a resort in Northern Ontario and I like to use the same paper theme throughout our trips so I thought I would try using the same sketch. I started by rotating the page clockwise and shifted the photo, matting layers, title and journaling to the bottom of the page, leaving a lot of lovely white space to the top. I kept the embellishment cluster in the top right corner for balance and distributed the other clusters accordingly and came up with this basic design.
And this page:
You can see these pages don’t look identical even using the same paper. You could probably keep rotating this sketch and come up with many different looks if you wanted to.
The next time you find a sketch you like, you should try to do more than one page with it. You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with.
